Introduction

The science of noise reduction is a very deeply researched topic among audio manufactureres. While noise reduction technology application ranges from use in recording studios, airplanes, and cars, we will mainly focus on the technology implemented in headphones. Headphones that provide a significant amount of noise cancellation and isolation from surrounding unwanted noise can have very practical and convenient uses. Examples could be trying to work or sleep in a noise filled environment to help minimize distractions. They are also of extreme helpfulness and demand on airplanes, to help minimize engine noise. I'm sure you can imagine many more situations where elinimating background noise could be convenient. This invention was quite ingenious as there are so many possible uses for them.

Ever sense audio companies starting making headphones advertising “noise cancellation,” or “white noise generation,” I was interested in how these phenomena work. How is it that I can put a tiny speaker next to each ear, yet have an incredible amount of isolation from outside sound? This seems like a strange and magical concept though, so how does it work?

I recently tested some Bose TriPort headphones and a pair of Etymotic ER-6s. While neither produce white noise nor offer sound cancellation, they still offer a very significant amount of isolation. So the next question is, with these fairly high-end headphones that do not advertise noise canceling or white noise qualities, how is it that one can experience the same effect?
